The first proposal for a sanatorium in Västerbotten was presented to the county council in 1904. Still, it was not until 1926 that Västerbotten County's central sanatorium, known as Hällnäs sanatorium, was inaugurated for the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis. It was built on a hill above the Vindelälven River, at an elevation of 273 meters above sea level. The sanatorium is typical of its time in style. The architect of the building was Klas Boman, and the builders were Strömberg and Bäckström from Umeå. The program was written by chief physician Arvid Labatt from Arvika. At the time of its inauguration, it was one of the most extensive tuberculosis facilities in Sweden, accommodating 208 patients. The sanatorium was then expanded in several stages to hold a maximum of 385 beds in 1951. There was a special children's ward with 54 beds.
The sanatorium had its own hydroelectric power plant, water tower, school, X-ray, operating room, glassworks, and bakery. The sanatorium had its own stop ("hoppets perrong") on the main line through Upper Norrland. In 1941, the sanatorium was hit by a jaundice epidemic with 180 cases of illness among patients, staff, and relatives. A well on the sanatorium grounds had been contaminated by a broken sewage pipe. During the 1950s and 1960s, the number of tuberculosis cases gradually decreased. The facility was used until 1970 for general pulmonary care and long-term care. Pulmonary care, including the training of medical candidates, was then transferred to Umeå Hospital and Umeå University. After that, drug addiction care was provided, and most recently, the main building has been housing summer berry pickers. (Wikipedia)
