During World War II, Debrecen was almost completely destroyed; 70% of the buildings were damaged, and 50% were completely destroyed. A major battle involving combined arms, including several hundred tanks (the Battle of Debrecen), took place near the city in October 1944. Debrecen was captured by Soviet troops of the 2nd Ukrainian Front on 20 October. After 1944, reconstruction began, and Debrecen once again became the capital of Hungary for a short time. (Wikipedia)
The railway station building was hit by a bomb on June 2, 1944, and the new building and its surroundings were planned directly after the war. The building design finally accepted was designed in a socialist, late modern style of the time by László Kelemen.
