I'm in Greece, and I will be also visiting Switzerland on my way back
In Greece, this time, I'm in the Thessaloniki areaAdendro ΑΔΕΝΔΡΟ
There are both local and long-distance trains on the line.
Class 120, Eurosprinter locomotive, Greek version
There are 23 units of Class 120 in use today, and it is basically the only electric locomotive available in Greece
120 028 was manufactured in 2004
Hellenic Train is owned by Trenitalia since 2017
Non-stopping train
It's not easy to be a cat in Greece
On my way to Thessaloniki, I can spot a freight train.
120 017
Not completely full container train is on the way to the harbour of Thessaloniki
The railway is crossing many streets in central Thessaloniki
Some of the tracks are actually not in use, as this oneAspros ΆΣΠΡΟΣ
This station is located on a short line between Thessaloniki and Idomeni and further to North Macedonia
The line was electrified in 1998 and upgraded with ERTMS in 2020. Right now, it is the only electrified railway line connecting Greece with the rest of Europe
There is not much classic signaling here
European route E75 is passing by next to the railway
There are no passenger trains on this line, and none connecting Greece with neighbouring countries
I was hoping to see a freight train, but I could at least spot this locomotive
120 021
The new Polykastro station is located outside the town. This is because the new stretch of the railway to Idomeni was built with a new stretch
I'm on my way to Idomeni
Idomeni is a border station between Greece and North Macedonia. The last passenger train went here in 2020, since Covid pandemic started all passenger services were suspended and they never returned
However, freight trains are still present
I just missed this one
In 2014, there was a refugee camp here with 15000 refugees trying to enter the European Union.
